Genealogical Review on the Uberti family of Casale Monferrato, in the light of Civil Status and Canonical records

Pier Felice degli Uberti was born on 28 February 1955 in Casale Monferrato with the surname Noรจ to Alfredo Luigi Noรจ and Lina Palermowho married on 4 September 1954 in Casale Monferrato.

Who is Alfredo Luigi NOE' then UBERTIS then DEGLI UBERTI?

Alfredo Luigi Noรจ was born in Casale Monferrato in 1923 to Maria Noรจ, an unmarried woman who, at the birth certificate of her son Alfredo, in front of the Registrar of Civil Status, declared that she had had the child from an ILLEGITIMATE union with a SINGLE MAN, not a relative and not a blood relative..

As Alfredo is a natural illegitimate he takes his mother's surname Noรจ. He does not appear to have done any particular studies, from โ€˜il Monferratoโ€™, which reports every year on the students promoted from every school of order and grade, one finds Alfredo NOE' only getting the 3rd gradeโ€™s elmentary school. This did not, however, prevent him from even being โ€˜Pro-rectorโ€™ of the Studium Academy, a 1970s/80s project by Pier Felice inspired by the name of the historic 15th-century institution in Casale. In those early years, the โ€˜Pro-Rectorsโ€™ also included his cousin Francesco Ubertis, a clothing trader, first a pedlar, then with a shop in town.

In December 1978, the Monferrato newspaper wrote: "โ€˜...ACCADEMIA Studium di Casale... recalling the name of the oldest academy in Casale... The board of directors elected Pier Felice degli Uberti as Pro-rector, the highest office of the society, and Marco Canova, president of the Kivanis, as inquisitor"โ€

Alfredo was a photographer in Casale by profession and opened his own workshop.

DECREE OF PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC GRONCHI OF SEPTEMBER 1955

In April 1954, Felice Ubertis Ubertis (1892-1954), photographer, widower for only one month of Teresa CARPEGNA (who died in March 1954 at the age of 65) married in articulo mortis - he would in fact die in June of the same year- Maria Noรจ and asked for Alfredo's (by then already 31 years old) recognition and legitimation for subsequent marriage. Which does not happen, we will now explain why.

When Felice died on 25 June 1954, an analysis of the documentation shows that it was impossible for ALFREDO NOEโ€˜ to be recognised and legitimised, as his mother, NOEโ€™, had declared at the birth of her son, back in 1923, that the father was a SINGLE man. This declaration in the form of an affidavit, made before the civil registrar with witnesses and transcribed and signed in the Casale Monferrato, registry office registers, therefore excluded FELICE UBERTIS from Alfredo's possible fathers, the latter having been married since December 1911 to TERESA CARPEGNA, by whom he had had two children: Alberto (1911-1963), a waiter, and Filippo (1912-1956), a miner. So the biological father of Alfredo Noรฉ, future father in turn of Pier Felice, according to the declaration made by his mother Maria NOE' in 1923 could NOT be Felice Ubertis, so much so that there was a provision that will be mentioned later.

To tell the truth, it should be added that little Alfredo was baptised at the age of three, and that the godfather and godmother, that is, Pietro NOEโ€˜, father of his mother Maria, and Angela MERLO, mother of Felice, declared to the parish priest a babyโ€˜s Surname that did not match the registry office records (!!!): the child was registered with the โ€œsurname Ubertisโ€, son of Felice and Maria NOEโ€™. The two were not married, Felice being canonically unmarried but civilly married to mrs CARPEGNA.

In the summer of 1954, Alfredo Noรจ applied to the President of the Republic to be recognised as the legitimate son of Felice Ubertis, on the basis of Felice's โ€˜holographic testamentโ€™, drawn up on 24 June 1954, i.e. exactly the day before his death, which was then published at a Casale notary in August 1954.

The President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Gronchi, by his decree of September 1955, countersigned by Aldo Moro as Minister of Justice, DOES NOT accept the request for LEGITIMATION and admits Alfredo NOEโ€˜ as Felice's ADULTERINE son, granting the change of surname from NOEโ€™ to UBERTIS.

The basis of the President of the Republic's decision is the ruling of the Council of State in 1955, which considered FELICE's will NULL because it was NOT holographic, having been drawn up by two different hands.

According to the decision of the Council of State, it was in fact the legitimate children of Felice Ubertis and his first wife Carpegna who did not oppose the use of the surname to Alfredo Noรจ, not so much to follow their father's will - since the will was deemed NOT valid - but by a consensual decision taken by themselves after being made aware of the impediment (invalid will). It is not, therefore, a question of legitimation, but of a nulla osta osta for the use of the surname UBERTIS by Felice Ubertis' children (born of his first wife Teresa Carpegna) to an ADULTERINE half-brother..

WHO ARE THE CHILDREN OF FELICE UBERTIS AND TERESA CARPEGNA ?

Alberto Ubertis was born in Genoa in September 1911, Felice's first natural son, then legitimised by subsequent marriage (only civil and not religious), a waiter by profession, he married Albertina Mazzucco in 1933 (with a certificate of โ€˜proven povertyโ€™): the two would be, Alberto and Albertina, godfather and godmother at the baptism of Pier Felice NOE' then UBERTIS then UBERTI.

In 1943 Alberto is in the news for having injured his hand while using a knife at work.

Filippo was born in Casale Monferrato in 1912, a labourer miner; in 1938 he married Vittoria BELLASIO, a tailor, with a certificate of โ€˜proven povertyโ€™. He resided in Casale Monferrato in Via dei Fiori n. 6; he had a son, Mario (1939-2021), a labourer, from whom was born Claudio (1966), a city policeman in Casale Monferrato, now living and representing the first-born branch, and only branch, legitimate and natural descendant of Felice Ubertis, who died in 1954. Filippo died in a mine in 1956.

WHAT DID PIER FELICE DEGLI UBERTI DECLARE IN 1980 ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE IN RELATION TO THESE GENERATIONS?

Taken from: Famiglie Nobili d'Italia e d'Europa, ed, Thule 1981

Pier Felice in this text erases TERESA CARPEGNA from the pages of history and, incomprehensibly, contrary to the existing records, and known to him, declares Maria NOE' to be the only wife of FELICE UBERTIS! So the children of Teresa Carpegna and Felice, the two brothers ALBERTO and FILIPPO (legitimate and natural from the first UBERTIS - CARPEGNA marriage), who consented to the use of the surname, as explained above, he makes them appear as children of NOEโ€˜ and hides the status of Alfredo's ADULTERIN son, who bears the surname NOEโ€™ from birth until the age of 32.

WHO IS LINA PALERMO ?

Mother of Pier Felice, Lina was born in Abruzzo to a peasant family that soon emigrated to Tripolitania (then an Italian Libyan colony). Forced in 1940 to leave her family with her sister (under the regime's laws for the imminent war), she grew up in an institute of the Sisters of Charity in Milan, with no family, where she learned the job of a knitter.

Lina Palermo was then sent to the institute of the same order in Casale. Finally free from the girls' orphanage when she came of age, Lina met Alfredo Noรจ. Lina PALERMO married Alfredo NOEโ€˜ in September 1954 and gave birth to their son Pier Felice NOEโ€™ on 28 February 1955.

Lina PALERMO made headlines when in 1966, after 26 years, she was able to see her family again after returning from Libya. Lina Palermo's father, and therefore Pier Felice's maternal grandfather, had meanwhile died in Libya (1948).

It is particularly interesting to compare this historical truth with the, to say the least, surreal narrative that Pier Felice gives in the press about his family, on the occasion of the publication of his mother's obituary.

On 6 May 2025, Pier Felice wrote an article about his mother's family on his Facebook platforms, here are two excerpts: "THEโ€™PROUDNESS TO BE ITALIAN! Today I was reminded of my Mama's Family. I am proud of it, as well as of my father's; and, as I have always said, the family of Lina Palermo, my mother, is not noble. My family tree dates back to the beginning of the 17th century: she was originally from Ortona, and moved to San Vito Chietino in the late 17th century. ... The fraternal friendship that bound my father to Minister Pier Luigi Romita meant that thanks to his personal interest, all of them (the Libyan refugee uncles, ed.) were employed as officials in various Italian ministries and customs offices."โ€

We are not proud to be "those Italians" ! If it were true, we would be astonished for those who boast, that by virtue of fraternal friendship with a minister, peasants and mechanics are turned into "officials in various Italian Ministries and Customs Offices" violating every ethical and moral principle of merit and law. The law that wants, in its enunciations, that a public post be assigned by public competition and not thanks to a politician who manipulates the rankings to insert his protรฉgรฉs โ€˜relatives of friendsโ€™. Not least the boasting of this violation of the law gives the measure, for those who boast of it, of their ethics and morals. WE ARE NOT HIGHLY proud of those Italian, we are proud of those who, with hard work in their studies, earn their professional lives with merit by going abroad, because corrupt and dishonest people have cut off all hope of employment and work at home.

Moreover, at dawn on 7 May 2025, Pier Felice, who considers himself the greatest genealogist, said: "the family of Lina Palermo, my mother, is not noble.". So for thirty years he has been writing information that does not correspond to the documents regarding his genealogy, as produced above! Palermo's coat of arms, as will be discussed below, he published in the Casalese blazonarium, then up until 2000 he declared in the Albo d'Oro repertory of noble and notable European families of Guelfi Camaiani to be Pietro (his grandfather) and Nicoletta Desantis aristocrats with the title of โ€˜nobleโ€™, when the registry documents show them to be peasants from the Abruzzi hinterland.

In the same article, Per Felice states: "โ€˜...I have always considered my grandfather to be an exceptional man: having entered a wealthy family, out of personal dignity, he wanted to equal his wife's social position...".

Nicoletta DE SANTIS' family lives in a house โ€œin the countryโ€ with no address or house number, her father is a farmer and does not sign the document. It is hard to imagine from what level Pier Felice's grandfather started from to bridge the social distance from his father-in-law!

Not to mention what is written for the obituary of 2021 published in Nobility and online newspapers.

And to close the roundup on Palermo, we would point out that an incorrect place of birth has been given in many publications, so we'll remind you: she was really born in Rocca San Giovanni and not in the charming coastal town of San Vito Chietino, beloved of the Vate D'Annunzio, with which they boast of kinship.

The Ubertiโ€™s residences

Pier Felice Degli Uberti's paternal grandmother, Maria Noรฉ, lived for over twenty years in Casale Monferrato in Via dei Fiori number 2. It should be added that, in that same residence, she cohabited with Felice Ubertis, who, let us remember, was married to another (Teresa Carpegna): they stayed there for a good 22 years. He had previously lived in Via Lanza.

The pictures show the marriage processicles of Felice Ubertis and Maria Noรฉ in April 1954 by Don Rossi, parish priest in San Domenico.

What kind of street Via dei Fiori (together with Via Lanza) was in Casale Monferrato is told by the local press. It is left to the lines of the many articles to paint a picture of this very degraded district:

From โ€˜Il Monferratoโ€™, the historic Casale newspaper:

"Alarm in Via dei Fiori because of a senator (editor's note: the senator is Lina Merlin who had already been working since 1949 on the law that would have closed brothels) ..."

"โ€˜...because of a brawl, a brothel at number 5 Via dei Fiori was closed down, five girls, more or less beautiful, were fired and the owner of that brothel was finedโ€

"...โ€˜...it is one of the ugliest, narrowest and most neglected streets, located in an area that should be completely demolished in order to be rehabilitated, and where restless women dwell and move about... a street, in short, where no festive processions will ever pass and where no luxurious cars with liveried drivers will ever stop in front of the black and beaten-up houses..."

"... the young Carolina Fracchia from Viarigi... accused of having suppressed her own child given birth on the night of 12 January... the corpse was found in a cesspit of a house in Via dei Fiori... the court sentenced the accused to three years imprisonment."

"โ€˜... concluded the trial for leonicinio (exploitation of prostitution, editor's note) ... Oderna Margherita 31 years old called โ€˜Teresitaโ€™ ... Demichelis Mario 31 years old nicknamed the โ€˜Moroccanโ€™ ... charged with instigation to prostitution of seventeen year old Marina Buffa in Via dei Fiori n. 5 ... Demichelis and his wife โ€˜Teresitaโ€™ sentenced to 1 year and 4 months"

"... In a recent order, the police commissioner ordered the definitive closure of a brothel in Via dei Fiori 22, since the management licence was in breach of recent regulations...โ€

"... a brawl that took place on Sunday in Via dei Fiori, the pursuit of a prostitute by some brats...โ€

"... a certain Mascarino, who lives at 34 Via dei Fiori, was arrested for aiding and abetting prostitution because she allegedly allowed a minor to use her lodgings for amorous meetings...โ€

"...how it would be time to think of a demolition master plan...walk along Via dei Fiori, cross Via Lanza...you will feel as if you have crossed the Kasbah of Algiers. The Borgo Po district would have to be redeveloped...โ€

"... the most unhappy areas of our city are three. The complex of buildings clustered behind Santa Croce, ... the area of Via Lanza and its environs with particular attention to the โ€˜Chinese quarterโ€™, i.e. Via dei Fiori and its environs...โ€

"... last anecdotes the 5- and 10-lire brothels in Via dei Grani and Via dei Fiori, women who pooped in the square on market days...โ€

The bleak picture arouses only pity for a derelict, poor, petty humanity, where victims (the prostitutes) and their exploiters (the pimps) made a miserable living.

NOBLE-HERALDIC FANTASIES ABOUT GRANDMOTHERS, GREAT-GRANDMOTHERS AND VARIOUS ANCESTORS

Reading the lengthy 1986 publication on Hidalguia, specially prepared and composed by Pier Felice with regard to the genealogical reconstruction of the Ubertis family, one comes across a theory of its progenitors, all decorated with coats of arms and cloaked in a curtain of aristocratic origins:

The Palermo family, as mentioned, are a family of peasants from Abruzzo, who returned refugees from Libya in 1966.

Angela MERLO (daughter of Carlo), wife of Alberto UBERTIS, fireplace and stove builder - parents of that photographer Felice, husband first of the Carpegna, then of the Noรจ -, is attributed nothing less than membership of the feudal Merlo family with its coat of arms. In reality, Angela Merlo was the daughter of a modest โ€˜limestone quarrymanโ€™ (miner).

In this case, Pier Felice manages to give three pieces of information that do not correspond to the documents in a single move: Rosa Decristoforis (wife of Felice UBERTIS 1836-1892) is a housewife, wife and sister of chimney-sweepers, i.e. builders of chimney pipes, fireplaces and chimney sweeps. In Pier Felice's narrative, without any documentation, she is declared a relative of the important Casalese Decristoforis family, famous lawyers and, above all, of that Tommaso Decristoforis, war hero and colonel who fell in the colonial wars. But that is not enough. The โ€˜world's foremost expertโ€™, as he calls himself, affixes the coat of arms of the noble Lombard โ€˜de Cristoforisโ€™ family to his great-grandmother, associating it with the two โ€˜Decristoforisโ€™ families from Casale, even altering her surname from โ€˜Decristoforisโ€™ to โ€˜de Cristoforisโ€™. Again quite inexplicable if done by the world's leading expert on heraldry and nobiliary law!

Here we reach the apex of dissimilarity from documentary reality. Maria Noรฉ was the daughter of a duty agent in Mortara and then a warehouse worker in Casale. The surname Noรฉ never had a coat of arms, but this was remedied by our Pier Felice... by inventing it and publishing it in the mock-up (by him) Blasonario Casalese, as will be explained below!

The certificate reproduced above reads Pietro Noรจ โ€˜Warehousemanโ€™.

โ€˜CHEAT, DOUBLE CHEAT AND COUNTER-CHEATโ€™ to quote a well-known italian film title

When Alfredo with Pier Felice closed the sad colonial page by performing a pacifying ceremony with the imperial family of Ethiopia.

This event deserves a special mention because it is of absolute level, a page of โ€œcommedia dell'arteโ€ on a par with the Totรฒ - Nino Taranto, commedians couple and the โ€œKatonga ambassador sketchโ€.

We read from the news bulletin IAGI, 2007 in memory of Alfredo degli UBERTI (in this regard, I would just like to mention the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Ethiopia, granted by H.I.H. Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie Haile-Selassie, nephew of Emperor Haile Selassie I, and President of the โ€œCrown Council of Ethiopiaโ€ as a testimony of pacification with the relatives of T. Col. Tommaso de Cristoforis, the hero of Dogali)..."

The couple Alfredo NOE'-UBERTS-DEGLI UBERTI & son, passing themselves off as relatives of the illustrious Casalese Decristoforis family (as explained above), which gave famous lawyers and Colonel Tommaso (who fell in combat at Dogali), managed to involve the descendants of the imperial family of Ethiopia, and in the name of a fictitious reconciliation, they managed to obtain the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Ethiopia (!). So, imagine the scene, the two NOE' - degli UBERTI adulterous descendants of photographers and chimney sweeps, have managed to convince the exiled Imperial family of Ethiopia to grant them a Grand Cross in exchange for the โ€œCHEATโ€! Thatโ€™s Pure art!

THE CASALE BLAZONARIUM

In 1985, Pier Felice Noรจ (later Ubertis then Degli Uberti) anastatically reproduced an ancient Casale blazonary, but, as an appendix, he added his own coats of arms and those of his friends at the end of the original 18th century blazonary! This is an embarrassing operation that transcends into the ridiculous. The fact that he published this โ€˜additionโ€™ within the anastatic reprint of the original, without changing the title, leads the unsuspecting reader to think that the added part also belongs to the period document.

THE UBERTI MAUSOLEUM

About twenty years ago, Pier Felice built a spectacular family chapel in a cemetery on the outskirts of Casale, far away and out of the way of the monumental Casale cemetery protected by the Soprintendenza alle Belle Arti (Fine Arts Superintendency).

What is affixed inside represents the summa of the narrative dreamt up by Pier Felice, here is the transcription:

"HERE RESTS THE FIRST-BORN BRANCH OF THE NOBLE LINEAGE OF THE UBERTI

HEIRS OF THE CICUGNONI COUNTS OF CAVAGLIA'

LORDS OF FRASSINETO TICINETO AND VALMACCA

HONOURING THE MEMORY OF THEIR ANCESTORS

PIER FELCE DEGLI UBERTI AND HIS WIFE MARIA LOREDANA PINOTTI

BARON AND BARONESS OF CATSBURN

LORD AND LADY OF BENHAM VALANCE'

Some notes: the first-born branch is represented today by Claudio. An adulterous branch does NOT succeed to any title (if it ever existed) in any current European country where a noble order still exists.

The titles of Lords (Lorf of the Manor) , mentioned in the inscription on the gravestone, obviously do not concern titles of nobility but, in the British legal system, today indicate simple private property that can be bought and sold without the intervention of the State or the King.

Then there is the theory of names of people who are buried elsewhere, neither relatives nor kindred, which would be reported to simulate a kinship with illustrious Casale lineages: all this is in reality just a figment of Pier Felice's imagination.

  • He is neither related nor kin to the โ€˜poetess Corinna called Teresah Ubertisโ€™ (1874-1964),
  • he is not related to the doctor Ambrogio Ubertis (1848-1932),
  • he is not related to Police Colonel Franz Ubertis (1914-1986),
  • he he is not related to Captain of the Bersaglieri (Infantry Rangers) Severino Ubertis (1890-1917) (despite the fanfare of the disarmed bersaglieri that he plays at the ball of the Cento e non piรน Cento, organised in Casale every year by Pier Felice),
  • he is not a relative of Lieutenant-Colonel Tommaso Decristoforis (1841-1887), whom Pier Felice, as extensively discussed above, insists on writing separately as โ€˜de Cristoforisโ€™, the surname of the noble Brianza family with which neither Tommaso Decristoforis nor Pier Felice degli Uberti have anything to do.

N.B.: since we are strict and make statements documented by registry office records, only persons within the sixth degree of parentage as provided for by the Italian Civil Code are to be considered relatives.

CRITICAL CONCLUSIONS

In 40 years, Dr. DEGLI UBERTI has created a family history steeped in incorrect news that does not correspond to the truth; events with characters that do not relate to his genealogy; omissions on his own family name; invented and laughable noble ancestry; inconceivable heraldic licences.

The problem arises precisely when one wants to pass in the eyes of scholars as the highest authority - not only Italian, but worldwide - in the field of Nobiliary Law and Heraldry. Indeed, Pier Felice attributes this title of โ€˜world's leading expertโ€™ to himself, because he covets it, he demands it even at the cost of having it recognised by the gullible and unprepared people.

Precisely because DEGLI UBERTI wants to be considered a serious and reliable scholar, then it is good that he also be so with regards to his family and his origins.

There is nothing improper about being descended from peasants, migrants, warehousemen or chimney sweeps, nor is it the fault of the descendants if the ancestors lived modestly in houses, in a seedy neighbourhood, surrounded by brothels and prostitutes. It is enough that one recognises this and does not falsify things in everyone's eyes, setting oneself up as a moraliser and rigid censor of this matter.

Because, one must always remember, there will always be a child somewhere in the street who will shout: โ€˜The King is naked!โ€™.

ONLY IN THE LIGHT OF THIS DISCOVERY DOES THE FANTASIOUS THEORY OF NOBILITY BY โ€˜PERSONAL IDENTIFICATIONโ€™ FORMULATED A FEW YEARS AGO BY DEGLI UBERTI, and reported in the magazine Nobiltร , which he directed and founded, make sense.

The WANNABE formula that turns chimney sweeps into earls.

APPENDIX

Having clarified the situation and examined the facts, we now ask ourselves a few things.

How did he and on what documents did Pier Felice obtain certificates of genealogy and nobility from Vicente de Cadenas, Cronista Rey d'Armas of Spain, in 1984?

How could he have entered so many Spanish brotherhoods that require genealogical proof of nobility for entry? And in knightly orders that also require genealogical and nobility proofs? Actually, in the light of the Decree of the President of the Republic of September 1955, by which it was definitively decreed that Alfredo degli Uberti, born Noรฉ, was an adulterous son, โ€˜the highest expertโ€™ has a family tree as a legitimate son that stops at his father Alfredo.. A bit of a stretch for a lineage that he boasts is almost a thousand years old.

How did he manage to be published in certain aristocratic books such as the two โ€˜Libri d'Oro della Nobiltร  italianaโ€™ (Libro d'Oro s.r.l. and Gallelli Editore editions) or in the Albo d'Oro delle Famiglie nobili e notabili europee (Guelfi Camaiani editions of Florence)?

How can a person who conceals, and alters, such a troubled and modest family history elevate himself to โ€˜hunter of false noblesโ€™?

But, above all, what documents have those who have admitted him into noble contexts with โ€˜genealogical evidenceโ€™ assessed, what kind of papers have they had at their disposal that we have not found, papers that can certify solidly and incontrovertibly - and in the absence of doubt - what Pier Felice has been claiming for years?

Because we are like the heirs of the Accademia del Cimento, which had the motto โ€˜Provando e Riprovandoโ€™ = We Approve the Truth and Disapprove the False.

A great deal of further documented information has been collected on the genealogical โ€˜manifestationsโ€™ of Pier Felice degli Uberti, and on his activities in the knightly, noble and genealogical fields for the publication of theLibro Bellissimo" on the โ€˜world's greatest expertโ€™ on these subjects.

We ask both of you: in light of the documents that have emerged and the family situation of NOEโ€™-UBERTIS - DEGLI UBERTI, were you both surprised in your good faith by what has been stated, for decades, by degli Uberti? Is this why you included him as a Grand Cross of Justice SMOC and accepted with proof of nobility in the noble Chapter of Aragon, Catalonia and the Balearics?

Last but not least, twenty-five years ago, the lists of the Italian Freemasonry of the investigation of the Public Prosecutor of Palmi Dr. Cordova were released, still online:

On page 6 of 308 we have the name of Pier Felice Degli Uberti, with his date of birth, profession and address of residence. Membership in Freemasonry is incompatible with the statutes of Catholic Equestrian Orders, since it carries a Latae Sententiae excommunication. Why this preferential treatment for Uberti?
